If you coach high school or youth football, you don’t need more ‘stuff’—you need a repeatable system. This post is built for USA-wide programs installing Air Raid principles with simple coaching cues and equipment choices that reduce cognitive load.

What you’ll get from this post

  • A clear coaching objective you can install this week

  • Step-by-step drills or setup cues

  • Common mistakes and quick fixes

  • An FAQ you can share with your staff

  • A direct link to training gear in the shop

The coaching objective

Speed up the quick game by making QB feet match the concept. The ball should come out on rhythm—your feet are the metronome.

5 drills (minimal equipment)

1) Catch-reset-throw

From shotgun: catch, replace feet, throw. Emphasize ‘quiet head, fast feet.’

2) One-step quick

One step and rip it on slant/now. If the QB hitches, the rep doesn’t count.

3) Two-step rhythm

Two steps for stick/spacing. Coach the plant foot and shoulder alignment.

4) Hitch-and-hit

For intermediate concepts: hitch once, throw. No double-hitch.

5) Pressure clock

Coach calls ‘2.0’ or ‘2.5’ seconds. QB must deliver by the clock—feet drive the timing.

Common mistakes (and fixes)

  • Mistake: drifting in the pocket → Fix: reset to a landmark

  • Mistake: extra hitches → Fix: concept-specific footwork rules

  • Mistake: wide base on catch → Fix: ‘replace, don’t spread’

FAQ

How often should we rotate technique vs equipment emphasis?

Weekly is ideal. Keep the core system constant, rotate the teaching tool (drill, constraint, or piece of equipment) to reinforce the same coaching point.

What’s the fastest way to see improvement?

Pick one measurable standard (release time, pad level, spacing landmark) and coach it every day for 7–10 days.

Do these ideas work for youth football?

Yes—simplify the language and shorten the rep length. Constraints (like chutes) are especially effective for younger players.

Where can I find training gear and coaching resources?
