Air Raid Concepts

Core Air Raid passing concepts explained and taught by experienced Air Raid coaches.

The Air Raid offense is built on simple, repeatable passing concepts that teach spacing, leverage, and quarterback decision-making. Below are foundational Air Raid concepts like Mesh, 96 Choice, Y Cross, and more — each supported with film breakdowns and coaching discussion.

92 Mesh -
Concept Explained

Mesh is a high-investment play, but once you teach the Mesh, you have taught all the essential concepts of the Air Raid offense. Man = run Zone = sit & find grass QB progression & decision-making Good vs every coverage. Open field, coming out, red zone. Arguably the best 2-point play in football. Coach Joe Salas teaches Mesh as a decision-making concept, not just routes — and he runs it every way possible.

96 Choice Concept Explained

The 96 Choice concept is the ultimate answer to any coverage, giving the receiver the freedom to find open space based on the defender's leverage. It teaches quarterbacks to read the 'apex' defender and provides a consistent high-percentage completion in the Air Raid passing game.

95 Y Cross
Concept Explained

Watch Breakdown on YouTube

The Y Cross is a cornerstone of the Air Raid system, designed to stress the middle-field defense. By clearing out underneath defenders and creating a high-low conflict on the second level, it provides the quarterback with a clear, high-percentage deep progressing read. This concept teaches essential spacing and leverage recognition for any pass-heavy offense.

Y Corner –  Concept Explained

The Y Corner concept is a high-low passing staple that forces linebackers and safeties to defend the entire vertical and horizontal field. By combining a corner route with a quick snag or flat underneath, coaches give quarterbacks a simple leverage read that remains a nightmare for both zone and man coverage schemes.

Slant-Shoot –  Concept Explained

The Slant-Shoot concept is a high-percentage Air Raid passing concept that stretches the defense horizontally. By pairing a quick slant with a vertical flat route, offenses force a simple high-low read that simplifies quarterback decision-making and ensures spacing and leverage are always exploited in the Air Raid passing progression.

Why the Air Raid Works

Simplicity

The Air Raid shrinks the playbook to expand execution. By mastering fewer concepts, players develop the confidence to react faster under pressure.

Repetition

Excellence is found in doing the same things over and over. High-volume reps build the muscle memory required for perfect spacing and timing on every snap.

3-Day Schedule

The entire system is installed in a three-day cycle that repeats throughout the season. This ensures every player remains master of the foundation.

QB Decision-Making

Instead of memorizing static plays, QBs are taught to read space and leverage. We empower the field general to make the right choice on every snap.
